Why EthosOne

The risk assessment is the control.

The bus is at the gate at 7:50 and the coordinator is on the phone about a consent form. The register tells the board what the school worries about.

In one paragraph

In school work health and safety, a risk assessment for a specific activity, excursion

Camp or site is the operational control: it is the document that shows the hazards were identified, the controls were chosen and the people responsible knew what to do on the day.

The gap between the document and the day

Every WHS matter we have followed in Sector Signal this year has turned on the same question: was there an assessment that matched the activity, and did the people on the ground know what it said. A register that lists "excursions" as a risk does not answer it. An assessment that names the creek crossing, the ratio, the weather call and who makes it does. Somewhere in the week before the bus leaves, that assessment still has to be written, and this is the room where it is.

Why assessments do not get written

It is 4:30 on the Wednesday before the activity. The lead has the plan in one tab and last year's assessment in the other, and the template is longer than it was the last time anyone opened it. The hour it takes is the hour after the timetable and before the parent email. Coordinators have told us this plainly, and it is a tooling problem rather than a competence problem, the one we set out to fix in 2.0.

Describe the activity. The draft is ready while you are still in ratio.

Type the activity in a sentence or two. The helper knows your jurisdiction, your school's categories and your appetite, and drafts the hazards, the controls, the treatments and a full bow-tie. You edit, the owner signs, the assessment sits against the excursion, and the register updates itself. The gap is detected, the draft is ready, and it attaches in one click.

What changes for the school

  1. Trips that do not unravel

Itinerary, risk assessment, parent comms, sign-off and debrief in one workflow.

  2. A register that is real

Every activity assessment feeds the living register, so the board sees the school as it is.

  3. Evidence when it is asked for

When the regulator or the insurer asks for the assessment, it is where it was signed.

Customer stories

School governance and risk is a complex area without a clear solution, a time-poor disconnect with governance and risk management that relies on Frankenstein models of electronic and paper-based reporting and measuring.

  1. 01What is the difference between a risk register and a risk assessment?

A register is the school's list of risks with ratings, owners and treatments, kept for oversight. A risk assessment is the specific analysis of one activity, site or situation, with its hazards and controls. Regulators look for the assessment that matched the activity.

  2. 02Does a school need a risk assessment for every excursion?

A school's WHS duties require it to manage the risks of each activity it runs, and an excursion or camp is the clearest example. Most state guidelines and school insurers expect an activity-specific assessment signed before departure.

  3. 03Can AI write a school risk assessment?

It can draft one from a description of the activity, with hazards, controls and a bow-tie, if it knows the school's context and jurisdiction. A person still reviews and signs it. In EthosOne the helper is embedded in the workflow rather than a separate tool.

  4. 04Is the AI-drafted assessment kept in Australia?

Yes. Retrieval stays in EthosOne's Australian environment and frontier AI is hosted via Amazon Bedrock in AWS Sydney.

  5. 05Risk assessments in school WHS, and how AI helps, in full: what does it cover?

The risk register is the board's summary of the school's exposure; it is not a substitute. Regulators and courts look for the assessment that matched the activity. EthosOne's embedded helper drafts hazards, controls and a bow-tie from a plain description of the activity so the assessment exists before the bus leaves.
