School board governance, started with the board

Start with your board.

In most of the schools we have sat with this year, the board has asked for something on AI, staff are already using tools nobody approved, and a parent has asked where the student data goes.

The Reporting home in Table view: every saved report configuration with its type, status, stage and last update.
A generated report in Review mode: the Word document on the left, the Comments and Changes panel on the right, Review and Edit at the top.
The Freeze milestone dialog on a board report: the report's selected data is frozen at this point so the preview, the executive summary and the generated document are built against data that cannot move, and everything before Preview becomes read-only, with Stay here or Freeze and continue.
The Edit document details dialog in EthosOne with document name, classification, taxonomy reference and group or entity attribution.

In one paragraph

An AI governance day is a facilitated day EthosOne runs with a school's leadership team, and sometimes its board, to map where AI already touches the school's duties: child safety, privacy, records, WHS, staff conduct and the curriculum.

It does not require an EthosOne licence and carries no obligation.

What the day covers

A whole-school conversation, not an IT project and not a policy in a drawer. Somewhere in the year, this question needs a day without the bell.

  1. 01

    Strategy

Where AI sits against the school's own plan, and what the board wants from it.

  2. 02

    Risk and compliance

The AI risks already on the table, drafted with controls and treatments you can adopt.

  3. 03

    Board engagement

What the board should ask, how often, and what it should see.

  4. 04

    Streamlined processes

Where AI lightens admin load without loosening the controls around it.

  5. 05

    Policies

Which of your existing policies AI touches, and where the gaps are.

  6. 06

    Staff alignment

What staff are already doing, and the guardrails that help rather than hinder.

  7. 07

    Accountabilities

Who decides, what is logged, who owns each decision.

  8. 08

    Privacy and data

Student and staff data, where it goes, and what never leaves the country.

What you walk out with

Customer stories

“School governance and risk is a complex area without a clear solution, a time-poor disconnect with governance and risk management that relies on Frankenstein models of electronic and paper-based reporting and measuring.”

Take the AI maturity assessment
  1. 01Does the AI governance day require a licence?

No. It is a standalone day with your leadership team, with no licence and no obligation. What you decide afterwards is entirely yours.

  2. 02Who should attend?

The principal, business manager and the senior leaders who own policy, risk and IT. Chairs and board members are welcome, and boards often ask for a short version at their next meeting.

  3. 03What do we leave with?

A shared language for AI governance at your school, a first view of the AI risks on your register with controls, and a clear picture of which existing duties AI touches.

  4. 04How long is it?

A full school day on site, or two half days online if that suits the team better.

  5. 05What happens next if we want to go further?

Most schools move to a focused uplift, configured together in Term 4 and live in January 2027 on the published licence.

  6. 06AI governance day for school boards and leaders, in full: what does it cover?

PolicyAI has tagged the obligations a school already carries that AI activity now touches, so the day works from real obligations rather than a template. Schools receive the AI risk register pack on booking, and leave the day with a shared language, their first AI risks on the register with controls, the eight questions their board should ask, and a written read from EthosOne. EthosOne is not a governance framework. It is a maturity model, focused on organisational complexity and built on our work with Meta Agility, and the assessment tells a school where it sits before anyone books a day.
